'Snewpy' Poster [A2] on matte Japanese paper

Long before developing his own visual language, Stiles Be learned to draw by copying the cartoons he found in the newspaper. Snoopy, created by Charles Schulz, was among the first characters to make a lasting impression.

There was something deceptively simple about the character—the economy of the form, the sense of volume, and especially the imperfect, textured quality of Schulz’s ink lines. Set against the cleaner graphic language of another childhood favourite, Garfield by Jim Davis, those lines had a particular character that stayed with him.

That fascination with texture, gesture and imperfect line has continued to surface throughout Stiles Be’s work.

Snewpy emerged almost instinctively, painted between larger canvas works. Rather than simply recreating a childhood image, the piece became an exercise in memory—taking something familiar, obscuring and abstracting it, and allowing it to become something else.

A childhood drawing remembered through an adult hand.
